This contract involves the new construction of two, three-mile, parallel bridges over the Hudson River with cable-stay channel crossings. Each of the bridges will consist of a 2,200’ (671m) three-span channel unit with a 1,200’ mainspan, three miles of concrete piers and steel girder approach spans. The contract is design/build and is held by Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC), which is 30 percent owned by Fluor Corporation, 23 1/3 percent by American Bridge, 23 1/3 percent by Granite Construction, and 23 1/3 percent by Traylor Brothers. TZC will construct the two new structures and demolish the existing bridge. AB was prime superstructure contractor for the 7,300’ (2,225m) deep-water portion of the original 16,000’ (4,900m) Tappan Zee Bridge crossing Hudson River above New York City.
